SSL Certificates

SSL Certificate Installation, Management, and Security for E-Commerce Sites

SSL certificates are not optional — Google penalizes HTTP sites in search rankings, browsers display "Not Secure" warnings, and 84% of online shoppers abandon purchases on sites without HTTPS. We handle SSL certificate selection, installation, configuration, and ongoing management so your e-commerce store is secure, trusted, and compliant with PCI DSS requirements.

Why SSL Certificates Matter More Than You Think

SSL certificates encrypt the connection between your customer's browser and your server, preventing data interception during transmission. For e-commerce, this means credit card numbers, login credentials, and personal information are protected. Without SSL, this data travels in plain text — readable by anyone on the same network.

But SSL is about more than encryption. Google has used HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014, and Chrome displays a prominent "Not Secure" warning on HTTP pages. In 2025, 95% of web traffic is encrypted, so the remaining 5% stands out as untrustworthy. For e-commerce specifically, PCI DSS compliance requires TLS encryption for all pages that handle cardholder data.

The challenge isn't getting an SSL certificate — Let's Encrypt provides them free. The challenge is proper configuration. Incorrect SSL setup causes mixed content warnings, redirect loops, SEO issues from duplicate HTTP/HTTPS content, and security vulnerabilities from outdated TLS versions or weak cipher suites. We handle all of this.

Our SSL Certificate Services

We provide end-to-end SSL certificate management. Certificate selection based on your needs: Domain Validation (DV) for standard sites, Organization Validation (OV) for businesses wanting verified identity, Extended Validation (EV) for maximum trust, and wildcard certificates for sites with multiple subdomains.

Installation and configuration includes generating CSR keys, installing the certificate and intermediate chain, configuring Nginx or Apache for TLS 1.2/1.3 only, setting up HSTS headers, implementing OCSP stapling for faster handshakes, and testing with SSL Labs for an A+ rating. We also configure automatic HTTP to HTTPS redirects and fix mixed content issues.

For ongoing management, we set up automated certificate renewal with Let's Encrypt or monitor expiration dates for paid certificates. Certificate expiration is the most common cause of SSL errors — our monitoring ensures your certificate never lapses.

SSL Implementation Process

1

Audit and Certificate Selection(1 day)

We audit your current SSL configuration (or lack thereof), identify all domains and subdomains that need certificates, and recommend the appropriate certificate type based on your business requirements.

2

Installation and Configuration(1-2 days)

Generate CSR, install certificate with proper chain, configure TLS 1.2/1.3 with strong cipher suites, enable HSTS, configure OCSP stapling, and set up HTTP to HTTPS redirects across all pages.

3

Testing and Verification(1 day)

SSL Labs test targeting A+ rating, mixed content scan across all pages, redirect verification, performance impact assessment, and cross-browser/device testing of the secure connection.

4

Monitoring and Auto-Renewal(Ongoing)

Set up automated renewal for Let's Encrypt certificates or expiration monitoring for paid certificates. Configure alerts 30 days before expiration. Regular TLS configuration reviews as security standards evolve.

SSL Certificate Use Cases

E-Commerce Store

Challenge: Online retailer with multiple subdomains (shop, blog, support) needing unified SSL coverage and PCI compliance for checkout pages

Solution: Wildcard SSL certificate covering main domain and all subdomains, TLS 1.3 configuration, HSTS preload, and mixed content cleanup across 500+ product pages

Result: SSL Labs A+ rating, PCI DSS TLS requirement met, customer trust indicators visible on all pages

Multi-Domain Business

Challenge: Company running 12 websites across multiple servers with certificates expiring at different times and no renewal monitoring

Solution: Let's Encrypt certificates with Certbot automation for 12 domains across 3 servers, centralized monitoring, and CAA DNS records restricting certificate issuance

Result: All 12 domains secured with automated renewal, zero certificate expiration incidents in 2 years

Security Hardening

Challenge: Financial services site with outdated SSL configuration supporting TLS 1.0/1.1 and weak cipher suites flagged in security audit

Solution: TLS 1.2/1.3 only configuration, disabled weak cipher suites, enabled OCSP stapling, HSTS with preload, and regular configuration reviews

Result: TLS configuration hardened from C rating to A+, eliminated 3 known vulnerabilities, HSTS preloaded

HTTP to HTTPS Migration

Challenge: Established website with 10,000+ indexed pages migrating from HTTP to HTTPS without losing search rankings

Solution: Full-site HTTPS migration with 301 redirects, mixed content fixes, sitemap and canonical URL updates, Google Search Console reconfiguration

Result: Zero-downtime migration, all redirects working, no SEO ranking loss during transition

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a paid SSL certificate or is Let's Encrypt enough?

Let's Encrypt provides free Domain Validation (DV) certificates that are functionally identical to paid DV certificates for encryption. Paid certificates offer Organization Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV) which display your company name in the certificate details. For most e-commerce sites, Let's Encrypt is sufficient. OV/EV certificates are recommended for financial services and high-value transactions where verified identity builds additional trust.

What is a wildcard SSL certificate and do I need one?

Wildcard certificates secure your main domain and all subdomains (*.yourdomain.com) with a single certificate. You need one if your site uses subdomains like shop.yourdomain.com, blog.yourdomain.com, or app.yourdomain.com. Let's Encrypt provides free wildcard certificates via DNS validation.

How long does SSL installation take?

Basic SSL installation takes 1-2 hours. Full HTTPS migration for an established site (fixing mixed content, setting up redirects, updating sitemaps) takes 1-3 days depending on the number of pages and complexity. Multi-domain setups take 1-2 days.

Does SSL slow down my website?

Properly configured SSL adds less than 10ms to each request — imperceptible to users. TLS 1.3 reduces the handshake to a single round trip, and OCSP stapling eliminates an extra lookup. HTTP/2, which requires HTTPS, actually makes your site faster than HTTP/1.1 through multiplexing and header compression.

What are mixed content errors?

Mixed content occurs when an HTTPS page loads resources (images, scripts, stylesheets) over HTTP. Browsers block or warn about these resources, breaking page functionality. We scan every page for mixed content and update all resource URLs to HTTPS before completing the migration.

How often do SSL certificates need to be renewed?

Let's Encrypt certificates are valid for 90 days and renew automatically via Certbot. Paid certificates are typically valid for 1 year. We configure automated renewal for all certificate types and monitor expiration dates as a safety net.
